Aja Naomi King at the 2016 IWMF Courage In Journalism Awards

Aja was at The International Women’s Media Foundation 2016 Courage in Journalism Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills on Thursday, October 20th. She made headlines when she blasted Donald Trump for his “Nasty Woman” comment he made toward Hillary Clinton during the final presidential debate this week. I’ve got pictures and a few quotes from her speech below!

Less than 48 hours after Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a “nasty woman” at the 3rd and final Presidential debate, it’s become a battle cry for women in the weeks before the general election. “I think [his comment] was a good thing. [We] nasty women have to stick together!” said Aja Naomi King, star of ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder and the film, Birth of a Nation, at last night’s Courage in Journalism Awards. “Any time Trump shows his true colors…I mean, how can you say in a span of 20 minutes that no one has more respect for women than he does, and then [call someone a] nasty woman? That speaks to a level of delusion that should terrify everyone.”

“Any time Trump shows his true colors…I mean, how can you say in a span of 20 minutes that no one has more respect for women than he does, and then [call someone a] nasty woman? That speaks to a level of delusion that should terrify everyone.”

King went on to add that “it’s disappointing that someone that is as much of a serious politician as Hillary is even has to [deal with] this. It’s like watching someone talk to a disgruntled Twitter follower. Why does she even have to engage in the conversation? She has held herself so gracefully.”

Trump has made no effort to hide his disdain towards the media, which is why last night’s International Women’s Media Foundation Courage in Journalism Awards took on added importance. The annual event—hosted by Glamour’s editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive—honors female journalists who have exhibited extraordinary bravery and courage in reporting from areas of instability, oppression, and conflict.

“I feel like we take for granted all the rights and privileges that we are given on a daily basis,” said King before presenting Mabel Caceres (founder and EIC of the Peruvian independent paper, El Buho) with her award. “To meet someone who wants to fight to just tell the truth about what’s happening in government…this is a real life superhero right here.” Source
